100* Songs I Felt the Vibe in 2023

It’s that time of the year once again! My favorite blog series is when I get to sit down and reflect the songs I enjoyed playing throughout the calendar year.

A safe space where I don’t have to discuss about my personal and professional because it’s about music. Sure, several songs reflect on certain moments in my life, but it’s the music that moves me. It’s why I’ve created six blogs about it over the years.

TOP 100 SONGS: COLLEGE | 2018 | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022

As always, I have a Spotify playlist for this list. However, I only included specific versions of certain songs to keep it consistent.

You might’ve noticed I put an asterisk on my title because of two specific songs from one particular artist who is known for certain versions. I couldn’t pick one over the other regarding two songs.

Technically speaking, it should be the “102 Songs I Felt the Vibe in 2023,” but it’s really 100 with special exceptions.

Before discussing the songs that impacted my year, if you like to follow my journey, look no further than the links below:

Outside of discussing about racing and music, I have my main photography page. Feel free to check out my works and if you’re generous, donations are welcomed to keep my business alive.

When it comes to my favorite songs, there’s some I really liked that would’ve made my list.

However, they either didn’t make my monthly top-25 or isn’t on Spotify by the time the blog is published. Those two are my only rules of conducting my annual list.

Here are four songs that missed out due to those stipulations, but are too good not to share.

Honorable Mention: boygenius – Satanist (Live) (2023)

For the life of me and honestly gobsmacked, I kept confusing Phoebe Bridgers with Gracie Abrams. I don’t know why I mixed both of them all year. Ultimately, it’s Abrams, not Bridgers, that’s opened for Taylor Swift in The Eras Tour over the past year and heading into 2024.

That being said, Bridgers is part of the supergroup trio called boygenuis with Julien Baker (whom I’ve heard some of her material back in 2018-19) and Lucy Dacus that’s a Grammy Award front runner with their early 2023 album, The Record.

Always open to branch out a bit, I gave two songs a go which were “Not Strong Enough” and “Satanist.” As you can tell, the latter stood out the most from their Saturday Night Live performance. For me, it’ll require some down time to listen to their material, but I dig their style (and their jackets) so far. I can’t rush it because some artists require patience and boygenuis is one of those acts.

Honorable Mention: Joni Mitchell – Coyote (1976)

If you’ve heard HAIM’s “Man from the Magazine,” you might recognize how it sounds similar to a Joni Mitchell tune. That’s because the song resembles “Coyote.”

Considering the sister trio from the Valley have mentioned Joni being one of their music influences, it makes sense. More so when I later read a Rolling Stone article that backed up my feelings that “Coyote” influenced “Man from the Magazine.”

If there’s a year where I’ve learned to admire artists who’ve paved the way for many others, 2023 was it and Joni Mitchell is that very reason. As you’ll find out next, it’s a full circle moment.

Honorable Mention: Joni Mitchell – Hejira (1976)

I talked about it in my “100 Songs I Felt the Vibe in College (2013-16)” blog, Joni Mitchell was one of the artists I learned at the University of Idaho. Her 1976 album Hejira was among those albums that made a tremendous impact in rock and roll.

This very track really stood out like I’ve heard this all my life. It’s an evergreen track that came back into my consciousness 10 years after taking a course where we talked about Joni. It sounds so good and willing to explore more of her music because the acts I listen to (ex. HAIM and Taylor Swift), were influenced by this legendary artist. I totally see it and I’ll give credit where credit is due because Joni is an all-time great in music.

This year was wild because my top song from March was on Spotify when it peaked, but no longer on the streaming platform. It hasn’t been since at least August when I noticed it’s no longer available.

Consequently, it put a huge curveball onto the impact of my annual list for the first time. On that note, here’s the song in subject.

Honorable Mention: Playa Fly – Just Awaken Shaken (1999)

Even if the lines are repetitive, “Jimmy Cooks” is a solid tune. The same can be said about the sample that Drake used for the number-one single a year ago.

As winter was coming to a close and spring was arriving, this tune was smooth and a nice tune to play while walking in the cold streets of Seattle. It explains why it peaked in March and if this song was still on Spotify, it would’ve likely be around 35th through 40th.

But since it’s no longer there, an Honorable Mention is the best I can do.

Finally, let’s dive into the songs that made my cut.

As you’ll notice, “The Girl Squad” occupied over a quarter of my list. As far as how many songs came from this year, 22 (technically 24) tunes will be represented.

Without further ado, I’ll stop stalling and unveil the 100 (technically 102) tunes I felt the vibe in 2023!

100) Avenged Sevenfold – Hail to the King (2013)

COLLEGE (2013-16) RANKING: 76
I knew some songs I liked a lot at Idaho will come back into my consciousness and dominate my favorite songs from December. I’ve been playing it a lot, especially the WrestleMania 32 promo highlighting Triple H and Roman Reigns. It’s a killer track that holds up well a decade later.

99) Metallica – 72 Seasons (2023)

In my mind, I contemplated of using this song for the footage I captured of the Women’s March Madness Elite 8 matchup between Louisville and Iowa. Unfortunately, the footage will never see the light of day and that includes being bulldozed by a Louisville player as I was following through Caitlin Clark’s layup.

Not long after such mindful vision, I thought this song would fit perfect for my 107th Indianapolis 500 playlist. From 4:15 onwards, you couldn’t tell me it doesn’t fit the tone of that clusterfuck of a race, specifically the final 90 minutes of the race. It does in my eyes and in my brain!

This track from Metallica’s 11th album is a whirlwind of emotions that it so fits the sports aesthetic. It’s used during first period highlights of Kraken hockey. All of those attributed of just making my cut for this year’s rankings.

98) Taylor Swift – Maroon (2022)

The first of 16 (technically 18) songs from Taylor Swift begins with a track from Midnights. As you might be able to realize, the two exceptions as to why it’s really 102 instead of 100 this year is because of Taylor.

Anyways, “Maroon” brings a soothing vibe into my soul and this month was the one that did it for me. When the time is right, it’ll make for a solid tune to play during sunrise. Perhaps come Busch Light Clash time it’ll come into fruition, but time will tell.

97) Fleetwood Mac – The Chain (1977)

COLLEGE (2013-16) RANKING: 16
2019 RANKING: 58
“Some things never change, they never fade.” It’s the best way to describe the reoccurrence of Fleetwood Mac’s magnum opus in my list. It’s a tale old as time.

Just as long as I don’t dive into the struggle of capturing great visuals of this song from a cover band that played in Seattle earlier this month. Life being a cameraman has its troubling moments, but this song will never be troubling. It’s a feelgood tune to play in different periods.

96) Banda MS de Sergio Lizárraga – Feliz, Feliz (Live) (2022)

One lost moment from that awful 2022 NASCAR All-Star Race weekend at Texas Motor Speedway, the weekend that unfairly ruined my social media and professional reputation, was Banda MS performing after the race. As I was working on articles and choosing my favorite photos, I overheard the group performing a cover of Mi Banda El Mexicano’s 1993 classic.

All I can remember is liking the much faster pace of the song. Fast forward to August 2023, as the family were departing from Southern California (it was almost a 24-hour drive), I thought about that Sunday night in Fort Worth. Lo and behold, this song does have an existing recording and played it for about an hour in that drive back home. It was a day of all-time and I’ll leave it there.

95) Taylor Swift – willow (2020)

Three years later, “willow” remains one of my favorite songs from evermore. Over the past few months, all I can think about was Dragon Ball Z during The Eras Tour concert film. If you know, you know! I still do because the young kid and teenager of me reminded me of those DBZ times.

94) Taylor Swift – Style (2014)

I’m in that boat where SV (Stolen Version) of “Style” just hits different in a positive way. While I do like TV (Taylor’s Version), it’s one of the few 1989 tunes where SV captured the energetic vibe better. I have both versions in my traveling playlist and can alternate, but considering SV was the one that ranked, I went with this version of “Style.”

Looking back to my days at Idaho, I’m a bit bummed “Style” didn’t stood out compared to “Shake It Off” and “Blank Space” for example. I would’ve ate it up back then, but considering where I was in life, I was listening and exploring extraordinary tunes where 1989 came and went for me. Now, I consider this as one of my three favorite albums from her. Side note, the album was the only one that came out when I was in college as Reputation came out a year after graduating from Idaho.

93) Taylor Swift – Welcome to New York (Both Versions) (2014 & 2023)

This version predominately peaked in October as I was waiting for 1989 (Taylor’s Version) to come out. Even in my time at Idaho, I remember liking this song and like several songs over the years, it reappeared into my mind when I needed it most. You can thank NBC’s usage of the track during the Sunday Night Football game between the Kansas City Chiefs and New York Jets.
Okay, the first of two songs from her where it’s a genuine tie! A first in my annual blog series!

Of the TV songs from this album, I really liked it. For the most part, it was well done as the new wave vibes happily remained in tact.

92) Metallica – Seek & Destroy (Live) (1989)

2018 RANKING: 72
A little story time with Luis! During the high school reunion, I was put in a box where I’ll do karaoke if one girl will do it afterwards. Long story short, she didn’t and how she responded back to me didn’t sit well. We haven’t spoken since that June night.

Anyways, I decided if I’m going to do it, I’m only doing either Metallica or HAIM. With the latter, the bar in Snohomish only had “If I Could Change Your Mind,” and I don’t fully know that song to shoot my voice.

Therefore, Metallica it is and felt their 1983 track “Seek and Destroy” is a nice tune to shoot my voice! With a little twist, I’m gonna emulate “Seattle ’89” and “Mexico City ’93” instead of the studio version. It meant mix both James Hetfield and Jason Newsted’s voice into the song.

Let’s just say my right ankle cramped a bit and my voice was sore after the performance. At least I won the crowd over and that’s that. Seattle ’89 was the version that resembled my karaoke performance and it’s the one I listen to the most anyway.

91) Olivia Rodrigo – bad idea right? (2023)

I’m still pissed this song didn’t genuinely took off this fall! I can say this about several songs because it was a genuinely bad year for pop in terms of being genuine hits that weren’t from 2019 or 2022. Rather than go on a full rant, I’ll keep it simple! This is one of my two favorite songs from her much anticipated sophomore album Guts.

I remember playing the music video when it premiered at a Five Guys in Ventura Blvd. No way was I missing it and as months went by, this song should’ve dethrone that piece of shit song called “Last Night” or at least been a top-five hit. Okay, that is all! “Bad Idea Right?” is a great song nonetheless!

90) Taylor Swift – Say Don’t Go (Taylor’s Version) (From the Vault) (2023)

“Say Don’t Go” and “Is It Over Now?” intertwine as far as my favorite “From the Vault” tracks from 1989 TV. This particular tune hit into my emotions, especially when I’m at a crossroads with my racing media career.

Part of me wants to continue, but another part is seeing the writing in the wall. Racing is like a relationship and it can be exhausting. Right now, I’m all but split up from my main love since I was eight years old. It can change at any time, but this was the song I correlated to my struggles. More so when the album came out a week before NASCAR Championship Weekend.

Furthermore, I couldn’t help but think about “He Lives In You” from The Lion King 2, especially in the chorus. That was the second thing I thought about when hearing “Say Don’t Go” the first time when it came out. Many will think about Taylor’s relationship with Harry Styles back in the day, I think about my career and one song from a movie. It’s how I function.

89) HAIM – Go Slow (2013)

This year can be described as the year I began fully appreciating the deep cuts from Days Are Gone. It’s one of my all-time favorite debut albums and just overall because there’s really no weaknesses. “Go Slow” is an underrated tune that I began to listen a lot this year. As evident with their entire album, finding their identities through relationships, sisterhood and their craft shines bright and “Go Slow” highlights the relationship aspect.

88) Metallica – St. Anger (2003)

As I always say when discussing about St. Anger tracks, it’s not everybody’s cup of tea. Compared to most songs from their polarizing 2003 album, the title track of the album is “Chad Energy.”

Back in January, I was going through an angering phase and regularly played it several times. Mostly to hear those infamous drums during the main riff. I love the sudden change in speed. I don’t know why other than it’s in your face and brash AF!

87) HAIM – Forever (2013)

2018 RANKING: 37
If you’re curious to know which song topped my 2023 Spotify Wrapped playlist? Look no further!

The my peak of listening “Forever” on Spotify was in June. I was learning to play the song on the piano based on sound as HAIM piano notes are obscure. Plus, I somehow ended up playing it over 30 times in a single day.

I partially blame the controlling reunion committee, but if there’s a song I can live with it playing 30 times, “Forever” is one of them. Due to those circumstances, it still surprised me to see it at No. 1 in 2023, but I shouldn’t be all that shocked.

I played it frequently throughout the year, peaking in my top-10 charts during the Month of May. In large part I played it before practice sessions began at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. That I do remember vividly!

86) Migos – Is You Ready (2018)

Bar none, this track belonged in my Indy 500 playlist! It’s a great hype song, especially with how the Month of May can be for everyone in Indiana.

85) Dusty Springfield – You Don’t Own Me (1964)

I can hear the pop and see the countdown! It’s etched into the minds of thousands upon thousands of people. The oldest entry on my list is this all-time classic. It’s not the more recognizable Lesley Gore version from the year before, but this cover is as good.

Naturally, this version will forever be associated as the song before The Eras Tour kicks into high gear and Taylor Swift hits the stage to perform “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince.”

84) The Aces – Girls Make Me Wanna Die (2022)

2022 RANKING: 62
The first of 11 songs that was in last year’s top-100 and made the cut this year is this gem by The Aces. It’s still an incredible tune and one of my five favorite songs from the group.

The extended intro of the song that’s only available in certain vinyl records is euphoric and was so immersive. If you can find the album at a record store or on the band’s site, I recommend it. Their whole album is great from top to bottom.

83) Compton’s Most Wanted – Can I Kill It? (1991)

It’s this track that used the iconic Isley Brothers tune before Ice Cube immortalized it! Yeah, that caught me by surprise this year because I’ve never heard this track beforehand. Better late than never! It holds up just fine.

82) Limp Bizkit – Break Stuff (1999)

The year I’ve discovered many snakes who’ve screwed me, used me and left me for dead! It’s no secret that I’ve had a rough 2023.

If I had to choose a song that I’ll associate with this year, this is one of two tracks. More so that it’s a kick ass tune and fits my mood sometimes. Specifically, the fall and winter seasons where the wrath kicks into high gear where sometimes I do feel like breaking stuff. But I think better of it and just blast this song instead. Shout out to Tito Ortiz for using the song during his UFC years.

81) Taylor Swift – You Need To Calm Down (2019)

For starters, why did it had to be this song I was listening to when I had to spend too much money to recover my Phoenix photos the night before the NASCAR Cup Series Championship Race?

It was so shameful because all I wanted was to hear this song before going to sleep and eliminate any negativity. At least I was able to recover almost all of my photos, but such an extreme hassle to deal with. Not fun!

Over a year ago, I remember hearing this song from Lover several times during my 11 months in hell. Initially, it was way too over the top and ear worm inducing. Not the place to hear such track! I’m glad I can enjoy the song for what it’s worth and not at a work setting!

80) HAIM feat. Taylor Swift – Gasoline (Remix) (2020)

All rise to the anthem of the 2023 Seattle Mariners! Huh?

I made an embarrassing parody of that sorry excuse of a baseball club after having their epic collapse in September. I don’t recommend you folks listening to it.

Back to the song itself, their unapologetic storytelling stands out tremendously here and it’s a definitive highlight of HAIM’s catalog. More importantly, one of the rare instances where having a featured artist enhanced the song instead of weighing it down.

I’ll never forget hearing it live (without Taylor) in Seattle last year and sang along with the group. Amazing times! I wish the Mariners front office can give us amazing times. Instead, they’re stuck in their 54% Era! Why do I root for this team? Carry on!

79) Danielle Haim – Till We Meet Again (2023)

From the first episode of A Small Light comes Danielle’s solo cover from a song that was published in 1918. It was composed by Richard A. Whiting with the lyrics coming from Raymond B. Eagan. Aside from the title being my mantra whenever I close out my videos and shows over the years, it’s a lyrically profound tune.

My memory of Danielle’s cover was playing it on repeat while capturing photos of lightning (it went okay). All alone in a Spokane hotel after finishing a gig hours before. If there was a song that set the mood perfectly, this was the very song.

78) Taylor Swift – Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince (2019)

Honestly, this song really needs no introduction because it’s the song that began a three and a half hour journey of unforgettable tunes.

The line, “it’s been a long time coming” is forever etched into my brain when I hear this song.

77) The Aces – Always Get It This Way (2023)

A track that’s meant to be played at high volume on a long drive! More so in a night setting as the lyrics imply. I’ve Loved You For So Long really dives into relationships and being vulnerable which they did really well. Of course, “Always Get It This Way” being one of those tracks that dives into those topics.

76) The Beaches – Me & Me (2023)

The buildup rules! I’m so grateful this Canadian quartet released an incredible bop like “Me & Me.” Their aesthetic and style is so my musical taste.

75) Paul Engemann – Scarface (Push It To The Limit) (1983)

At long last! I can finally classify Scarface songs into my year end rankings! I’ve been hoping for the day the soundtrack and film score were to be released. Perfect timing for the film’s 40th anniversary. This is what I played at full volume on a rainy Monday morning at Ventura Blvd back in February. It was kick ass euphoria at its finest!

74) Taylor Swift – Shake It Off (2014)

COLLEGE (2013-16) RANKING: 58
2019 RANKING: 36
What I said about “Style” applies to “Shake It Off.” It’s hard to top when this version when I’ve heard it so many times over the past nine years.

73) Frank & Moon Zappa – Valley Girl (1982)

That one Instagram story from Alana Haim which had this song is why it made my cut! You can’t escape this jam, no matter how hard you try! Take away the obnoxious “Valspeak,” the song shreds to the max, but it takes away the value of this 80s tune. Without it, something is missing and defeats the initial purpose of the song!

I call it genius on Frank Zappa’s part despite folks twisting the message. Frank detested the Valley and yet people loved it! Gotta love how that shit works, you know? By the way, that bassline rules!

72) HAIM – My Song 5 (2013)

2022 RANKING: 26
Sounds bad ass live! Let that be known because I don’t recall saying it a year ago. It’d make for a good wrestling match promo, but it’ll require a lot of factors for this to work. So let’s stick with “My Song 5” being a great walkout entrance in baseball. Danielle’s main riff brings that mean streak for it to work.

71) The Rolling Stones – Angry (2023)

I’m a firm believer that people should embrace their sexuality. Sydney Sweeney fucking gets it and if you were to ask me my top-two favorite music videos of 2023, “Angry” is one of those two videos with “First Person Shooter” being the other.

With that out of the way, the song itself was a breath of fresh air and so glad the Rolling Stones rule after all these years. Excellent track to say “I’m so back!”

70) Dua Lipa – Houdini (2023)

If it’s the new direction Dua Lipa is heading going into 2024, I’m all for it. The disco driven tune gave me Electric Horseman vibes which sounds little to nothing like “Houdini” whatsoever. But what it did remind me was CBS usage of disco tunes for their starting grid music in the early 1980s. That alone is probably why it reminded me of the Dave Grusin gem. Overall, a nice bop and curious to see what’s next for the dazzling artist.

69) Captain Sensible – Wot (1982)

The record was from 1982 and it peaked during that year. Absolute fumble to consider it as a 1983 hit! Anyways, there’s two versions with the same pitch tone. What you’re hearing is the slow tempo whereas on Spotify, it’s faster. Either way, both are mellow AF with a sexy ass bassline. I played it a lot during my two visits in Southern California for the Clash and Fontana. It’s an obscure 80s gems, but I have no memory where I first heard it.

68) Pharoahe Monch – Simon Says (1999)

Godzilla FTW! Makes me wanna roll my head like I’m D’Lo Brown coming into the ring. Sam Rockwell made this a cool jam to do his moves and nobody did it better.

Mean, intense and memorable. A bit too memorable considering I hear the instrumental during hockey games. More so when the Kraken are in a shootout at home.

67) Taylor Swift – Anti-Hero (2022)

I use the line “It’s me, hi! I’m the problem, it’s me” as a reference to my putrid luck better known as #LuisLuck. Inspired by #JessLuck a few years ago, but I rarely post about on social media days. Another track I played a lot early in the year and still do every now and then. It’s a nice, relatable bop.

66) Beastie Boys – Sabotage (1994)

Be right back! I’m on camerawork duty!

The song I heard the most in 2023 is “Sabotage,” the introduction track for some Kraken hockey goods. It has to be a well known fact considering where I work! So much, that I used this song in both my 2023 Busch Light Clash and 107th Indy 500 playlist.

65) Feist – Let It Die (2004)

Excellent song from an excellent album that’s almost 20 years old. Great song to hear if you’re at a coffee shop and drinking a latte. Okay, that was the case for Danielle Haim when she was a guest on Free Period with Sasha Spielberg and Alana Haim back in April. Nevertheless, if this was the way of being introduced to Feist, I’m totally glad that episode was the case.

64) Childish Gambino – Les (2011)

Inject the violin into my veins! Rugrats comment aside, it’s an adventurous tale which is why I ended up liking this track. In some ways, I associated this track with a girl I met a year ago and gotten to know quite a bit. The main difference is her background being anything but New York. She’s a New Englander.

Also, my way of “baddest” is different than what Mr. Glover was saying here because it’s not some Mr. and Mrs. Smith shenanigans. Maybe in my dreams, but I never dreamt with “Les” playing in the background.

63) Depeche Mode – Enjoy the Silence (1990)

2022 RANKING: 1
Last year’s top song reappears! I still play it when there’s a bit of downtime before clocking in for work in Seattle.

62) The Aces – Suburban Blues (2023)

“Not that girl from Phoenix” was the main reason I included this song in my NASCAR Championship Weekend playlist. I also know a girl that falls in that category, who I’ve felt jaded over the years. A telling story focusing on being vulnerable. Katie Henderson’s riff in the beginning is a classic straight out of Metallica and 2000s rock in general. I welcome that in my 2020s rock!

61) Giorgio Moroder – 409 Citrus Drive (1983)

This is peak Giorgio!

Everything that made him great in the late 70s and throughout the 80s is capsulated with the haunting tune-up to the main theme. Tony was a lost soul by this point and it all cultivated with shooting his friend Manny, right in front of Gina.

I really like this version of the main theme now that I can listen to it during down time. More so a month ago after watching Scarface on the big screen with an Eras Tour cup and popcorn bowl (on purpose). It was available dammit! I didn’t have the bowl!

60) HAIM – Falling (Duke Dumont Remix) (2013)

During AquaSox season, I decided to listen to the Falling EP and see if the remixes of my favorite HAIM song were any good. Duke Dumont assured that it was euphoric and was happy it was included in the Days Are Gone: 10th Anniversary release in September.

It’s a lovely samba to hear back in June as I was well into my nostalgia bullshit. I should’ve included this in my high school reunion playlist, but went with another “Falling” remix instead. Not that it really mattered because it never got played from start to finish. The only task I really cared about doing, wasted.

59) Rage Against the Machine – Guerrilla Radio (1999)

My GET REKT song of 2023!

One dream I had was me and two other people exiting a fighting bar in Southern California with the outro being the focal point. Suddenly, I was also accompanied by a trio of sisters which made it a six-person BMF walking sequence. The “Now I’m In It” music video is how it kind of went in terms of the BMF walk.

58) Calvin Harris feat. HAIM – Pray to God (2014)

A lost gem by Calvin Harris in terms of jams he produced over the years. It’s arguably HAIM’s most recognizable tune as a featured artist. I’m sure “no body, no crime” is well ahead of “Pray to God” at this point. Considering how popular the band is in the United Kingdom, this track must’ve been big in 2014. In lamest terms, everyone shined bright in this collaborative effort!

57) Pink Floyd – Echoes (Live at Pompeii) (1972)

If you have 25 minutes, you’re going to have an adventure with this track. Every build is used to its max potential which makes this a song for the ages.

56) Pearl Jam – Even Flow (1991)

All rise for Skateboard Jesus’ national anthem! Who knew this song and skateboarding would be a match made in heaven?

55) The Beaches – Cigarette (2023)

If you’re into the 80s new wave/rock vibes, Blame My Ex’s album closure is it! Between Jordan Miller’s demanding vocals and smooth baseline, power couple Leandra Earl and Kylie Miller’s gratifying guitar playing, and of course, Eliza Enman-McDaniel’s fast drum tempo, “Cigarette” kicks ass! I also sense a little bit of Romeo Void and Flock of Seagulls in this track which is boss. This jam requires your attention by any means necessary.

54) Taylor Swift – Look What You Made Me Do (2017)

A rock version of this song enhanced an already peculiar song. It’s a great live track, but the studio version is still good after all these years. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, go ask Todd in the Shadows back in 2017!

At least the interpolation of Right Said Fred’s “I’m Too Sexy” bodies Drake and Future’s usage for that rancid number-one song! In fairness, Future’s interpolation is good yet annoying, but “Way 2 Sexy” is garbage! Only listen to his verses!

Back to the song, time will tell how this song and the rest of Reputation will sound like in “Taylor’s Version” whenever that time arrives.

53) Phoenix – If I Ever Feel Better (2000)

Another song Danielle referenced in Free Period was this bop from 2000. While working on articles and editing photos, I had this song in the background. Notably, during the Grand Prix of Portland.

52) Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band – Ramblin’ Gamblin’ Man (Live) (1975)

The live version of this song is so good! It highlights the growth and stardom of Bob Seger since the song was originally released in 1969.

51) Bad Bunny – Chambea (2017)

¡JALA!

Remember, it’s him who put some respect on celebrities being good wrestlers in modern times. Fuck Logan Paul! Team Benito FTW!

50) CAN – Vitamin C (1972)

Inherent Vice may not be my personal favorite Paul Thomas Anderson film, but the intro is one of my favorites. It totally helped that “Vitamin C” was the song used to paint the premise of the film and welcome us into Southern California in the late 60s.

49) Beach Bunny – Love Sick (2021)

After a year break, I got back into hearing some Beach Bunny in my rotation. “Love Sick” was a track I didn’t thought about much, but I’m glad I gave it a full chance this year. Great song to play on the road, especially after the second chorus. Picture yourself driving on a long and winding road on a golden hour summer evening.

48) Drake & 21 Savage – Rich Flex (2022)

“21! Can you do somethin’ for me!” This song really isn’t something to write home about after Drake’s opening line on repeat. It’s a fine song, but the opening is the highlight by a country mile. Better than most of Drake’s material since 2014 that’s for sure.

47) Boston – More Than A Feeling (1976)

Legendary song to play on a morning drive. Trust me from experience, it sounds so powerful when you play it during such setting. Okay, this iconic tune can be played at any time, but my advice is play it during the morning.

46) Duke Deuce – SOLDIER STEPPIN (2021)

Bass so strong, it’ll power generate an entire state! Loud and unapologetic this crunk tune it is! Glad this style of rap is alive and well.

45) HAIM – Home (2023)

What a phenomenon Barbenheimer was this year! For weeks, I was eagerly waiting to see how HAIM’s most recent song will fit in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie. Upon hearing the lyrics, it had to be towards the end of the film. Such thought was proven right as it became the final song before the credits. It summarizes everything Barbie went through and now is ready to make a living in the real world.

44) Cigarettes After Sex – Apocalypse (2017)

2022 RANKING: 34
Back again is Cigarettes After Sex! Compared to most songs that were in last year’s list, “Apocalypse” remained consistent. More so when this song constantly played during long, cold and rainy dives. Especially, when I had a piece of shit rental truck I didn’t want during Fontana weekend. This was the last song I heard before handing over the keys in Ontario and head back home in the state of Washington.

43) Olivia Rodrigo – love is embarrassing (2023)

At a hearing glance, the song is a spiritual sister to “Good 4 U.” That doesn’t weigh the song down because it’s unique enough to be its own story. Listen to the first two verses, it shows some growth into her rock themed songs. You still have your angst vibes accompanied by sassy vocal ranges. All of those reasons are why I consider this my favorite song from Guts.

42) HAIM – Falling (2013)

2021 RANKING: 1
2022 RANKING: 85
It still holds up years later! I can safely say “Falling” is one of my mantra songs that’ll define how I live in life. I’m forever thankful I decided to make the short notice trip from Seattle to Los Angeles and see them perform at newly opened Bellwether in July. More so because they were playing their entire debut album from top to bottom, meaning this will open the show. What an unforgettable night!

41) The Doobie Brothers – Jesus Is Just Alright (1972)

This one’s for the summer drives and getaways! It’s all I can say about this song I heard being played during AquaSox games.

40) Caroline Polachek – Bunny Is A Rider (2021)

Caroline Polachek is one helluva artist! I dig the song’s simplistic sound and storytelling. It’s honestly straight forward where the song was inspired from. Quite an addicting tune if you ask me.

39) Drake feat. J. Cole – First Person Shooter (2023)

I’d like to know why I initially gave this song a 1/5 when it hit number-one? Must’ve been in a shitty mood when I heard it because I don’t know what was I thinking here. In a year of shit hits, “First Person Shooter” was one of the brightest jams!

Lately, I’ve been playing it a lot after the Seattle Seahawks beat the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. Shit! That game was “Big as the Super Bowl” in my eyes! As for the music video, this is the other one I consider as the best of 2023. As the cool kids like to say, this video is “CINEMA!”

38A) The Warning – EVOLVE (2022)

Not gonna lie, it took time to finally love this song like many of their other tunes. What I mean by that is hearing it in full when the setting was right. As fall became winter, “EVOLVE” deserves its justified flowers for being one of their best tracks ever. It’d make for a beast 8-bit song by the way!

38B) The Warning – EVOLVE (Live) (2023)

Here’s my first A and B ranked song because I’ve noticed their VMA performance is considered the trio’s genuine arrival! Just listen to drummer Paulina “Pau” Villarreal Velez’s commanding energy on getting the crowd into the bridge! If I were NASCAR, get this band for the 2024 Busch Light Clash because they’re that band!

37) Paul Wall & Big Pokey – Sittin’ Sidewayz (2005)

I’m on my Midnight Club 3 nostalgia trip in 2023! RIP Big Pokey.

If you want a good song to hear while grilling in the summertime, then this song’s for you!

36) Cannons – Fire For You (2020)

Cannons is an experience and so are their music videos. Michelle Joy’s spine chilling vocals is what makes the band so special. Especially when you’re hearing their songs deep into the night.

35) Buzzy Lee – Cinderblock (2023)

The most addicting chorus of 2023 comes from Buzzy Lee’s disco jam “Cinderblock.” Fun little bop to dance to.

34) The Beaches feat. The Aces – Everything Is Boring (Remix) (2023)

All I thought about on a nice June afternoon in Seattle was The Beaches make some fun tunes. I learned right away, they’re not just a fun group to listen, but very in your face with their songs. Great collaborative song between both amazing bands!

33) HAIM – Days Are Gone (2013)

On my way to The Bellwether in July, this disco centric jam was on repeat. One of the few songs bass player Este Haim sang. In this specific case, she’s the lead vocalist. Underrated track from their iconic catalog and no question, a song meant to be played at full volume while driving.

32) Taylor Swift – Karma (2022)

The tour closure and specific record that sent shockwaves in Buenos Aires. The latter is because of one subtle lyric change during Night 2 where instead of “karma is the guy on the screen,” it became “karma is the player on the Chiefs” because of one Travis Kelce being at Taylor’s show.

We’re still living in the “Swelce” Era as we speak that’s for sure.

31) HAIM – Little of Your Love (2017)

2022 RANKING: 72
The next two songs are purposely ranked back-to-back because of what I’m going to describe next. But I really love this dance centric tune from their 2017 album Something To Tell You.

30) Simple Minds – Don’t You (Forget About Me) (1985)

2022 RANKING: 92
Hear me out! This song and “Little of Your Love” has the telling of a great mashup!

I know, of all things I can come up with a music mashup, Simple Minds and HAIM are polar opposites. A year ago, I decided to make such mashup and fell in love with the effort. It’ll never see the light of day, but those two songs defined my year from a creativity point of view.

29) Alabama – Mountain Music (1982)

This is country music! Not whatever is mostly polluting the top-40 these days! Can’t wait for baseball season!

28) Dua Lipa – New Rules (2017)

Dua Lipa brings such an aura with her songs that goes back to the beginning of her career. Despite all these vibrant tunes she’s released, I still think she’s criminally underrated in today’s mainstream music.

27) Audioslave – Cochise (2002)

2022 RANKING: 81
Due to the removal of “Just Awaken Shaken,” my top-25 got messed up horrifically and had to make supplemental picks.

I frequently played this song throughout the year, but forgot to ever included in my top-25 all year. Yet, it had every reason to make my cut because it’s a kick ass track.

To fix some of my rankings, I made some supplemental picks in December to justify the effects of “Just Awaken Shaken,” which ranked in my top-25 twice in 2023. I’ll consider “Cochise” and Limp Bizkit’s “Break Stuff” as their replacements, but ranked towards the bottom of my top-25.

Going forward, should such occurrence happen again, I’ll had three alternates each month.

26) Romy – The Sea (2023)

The spirit of my past love for The xx is back at full swing with Romy’s much anticipated solo debut album Mid Air. Everything that made the group unique is present in this song and was reminded why Romy is one of my favorite female vocalists ever. A decade later, the love is still there!

25) Bad Bunny – MONACO (2023)

An opening straight out of a telenovela comes Bad Bunny’s triumphant homage to a country. Of course, this song revolves on both the Principality vibes and Formula One. It doesn’t require a lot of thinking as to why this song ranked so high in such short amount of time.

24) Chappell Roan – HOT TO GO! (2023)

Charismatic personified is one way to describe Chappell Roan’s music, including this one. Keep an eye on her works, she is a superstar on the rise.

23) Taylor Swift – tolerate it (2020)

Still a novice on the piano, it’s no secret that the piano notes from “tolerate it” captured my emotions. Usually, that’s the case with songs that are piano centric.

As far as The Eras Tour performance is concerned, easy top-five. Especially, the piano introduction as she’s setting up the dinner table that leads into the song.

22A) Taylor Swift – Vigilante Shit (2022)

Cold and sinister with a sexy edge is how I like to describe “Vigilante Shit.” One of her more underrated songs in her 17-year music career.

22B) Taylor Swift – Vigilante Shit (Merengue Remix) (2022)

There’s a compilation aptly titled “The Errors Tour” and the first clip shows her performing “22” with a merengue remix of “Vigilante Shit” in the background.

I immediately tried finding it and Lonelez came through with this FIRE REMIX! Grin from ear-to-ear and what I played at full volume in my office room after the Washington Huskies beat those bum asses from Nike U in the final PAC-12 Championship Game. Maybe one Modelo beer is enough.

21) Jay-Z & Kanye West feat. Otis Redding – Otis (2011)

What really got me through that 24-hour drive back from Southern California! Okay, one particular video played a huge comedic role as to why.
YOU’RE WELCOME!

20) HAIM – Hallelujah (2019)

2022 RANKING: 76
On the first night at Disneyland, I overheard a group of people singing John Cale’s “Hallelujah” (the one played in Shrek). You do you! I decided to play HAIM’s “legacy song” deep into the night until I decided to get some sleep. It became my anthem during family vacation.

19) Aimee Mann – Wise Up (1999)

2022 RANKING: 94
Magnolia is an all-time favorite movie and the “Wise Up” scene is one of the most memorable moments in a Paul Thomas Anderson film. As cheesy it may be having the ensemble sing to this song, it really made a powerful impact that’ll last a lifetime.

On a personal note, this song saved my life back in February. It’s all I’ll say about the matter.

18) Romy & Fred again.. – Strong (2022)

Countless hours were spent this summer playing F1 23 with this song being one of the only ones I liked from the game. It’s more enriching when “Strong” is played on the PA systems as my car is on the dummy grid. A symbol that the madness F1 can be sometimes is about to begin.

Such a perfect song EA Sports included for their soundtrack.

17) Mannie Fresh – Real Big (2005)

All rise for the true PlayStation 2 national anthem!

When I played this on Interstate 5 in Los Angeles on a Friday night, I felt “real big” for once. Even if my rental car was rubbish!

16) Boston – Foreplay/Long Time (1976)

Boston really introduced the future in 1976 and maybe we’ve been living in such future since. An intro for the ages on top of an all-time rock anthem is why their self-titled debut album is GOATED. It makes going through traffic bearable, especially when I have to go from Seattle to Ontario after working a Storm game.

15A) Dua Lipa – Physical (2020)

A neat track to play at night in Southern California! Intensity is one way to describe the song!

15B) Dua Lipa – Physical (Live) (2022)

An even more majestic version that’s perfect for the night setting! No matter where I am in this scenario! It could be Oregon of all states for all I care!

14) Romy – She’s On My Mind (2023)

Have you ever had that feeling where you can sense the next single coming in a heartbeat. “She’s On My Mind” is that record for me because all the vibes was there. Great album closure and once again validated what I said about Romy in “The Sea.”

The timing of the song was ironic because the lyrics can be applied to anyone. For me, it’s liking a girl that I outright met outside of my inner circles, but we’re just friends. Listen to the lyrics and you get the general idea. In an ideal world, falling in love with a girl I know becomes a reality. Maybe someday, but time is ticking as far as my prime years are concerned.

13) Dua Lipa – Dance the Night (2023)

How this song never became number-one is an insult! It should’ve been, especially when Barbenheimer was running wild! Oh well! Back in August, I fell for a “summer girl” at work in Carnation. Like we just clicked and felt such affection.

When this song came out during Silent DJ Night, forget being a retired dancer, I un-retired for one night only. All because of “Dance the Night” and to impress such “summer girl.” I’ll forever associate this song with her and hope she’s doing well.

12) Taylor Swift – …Ready For It? (2017)

I’m gonna partially blame a certain friend for possibly playing a role of including this song in the Kraken pre-season video package before tip-off. I highly doubt she had anything to do with it, but knowing she’s a Swiftie to the core, it makes sense on the surface. That can be said about many people, so it’s one of those deals where I’ll never know.

I almost used this song for the NASCAR Cup Series Championship 4 hype video I thought about doing, but it fell through. Like always, I had no time and it’s an example where what looks good on paper isn’t going to have a positive result. A couple of colleagues were gob smacked (one being a Swiftie) and glad I didn’t stuck with the plan. I’m glad it never materialized either.

11A) Death – Left to Die (1988)

My voice ends up very sore when I listen to this death defying metal record. If you forgot that music taste are all over the place, “Left to Die” is here to remind you!

11B) Death – Left to Die (Live) (1988)

“Left to Die” is the opener of their live set, so you won’t have to go far in finding it. This is the version I prefer much more and leaves me with a sore voice. Imagine working out to this song, you wouldn’t want to be bothered.

10) Taylor Swift – Cruel Summer (Studio & Live Version) (2019 & 2023)

As was the case for “Welcome to New York,” two versions of “Cruel Summer” are in a tie because it’s hard to choose which one I prefer. In my opinion, this is Song of the Year. I don’t care what Billboard and what the sales says, “Cruel Summer” is that song over trash ass “Last Night.”

A song that was released in 2019 which was meant to be a single in 2020 before the pandemic, became the number-one song in 2023. Euphoric melodies shine ever so bright. Now this is a summer jam and a legit pop hit which was otherwise lacking in 2023.
The truth is, The Eras Tour version was ranked much higher in my top-25 monthly rankings. But I couldn’t ignore the studio version which is why it’s a genuine tie. Everything about the Lover set was flawless. Well executed with “Cruel Summer” being the definitive highlight.

9) HAIM – Summer Girl (2019)

2021 RANKING: 17
2022 RANKING: 2
For the third straight year, “Summer Girl” has made my top-20 songs of the year. Although just making my top-10 after being one spot short of being No. 1 last year, I still love playing this record. More so in its proper setting, the summertime in Southern California.

8) The Aces – I’ve Loved You For So Long (2023)

Between the Month of May and seeing the band perform live at The Showbox in October, The Aces put on an incredible album with ILYFSM being one of their best songs ever done. I’ve been amazed on their growth since first hearing their music back in 2018. Sky’s the limit for the indie rock group!

7) Drake – No Friends In The Industry (2021)

Ever since Indianapolis, this song lives rent free! I stand for my principals and if they’re against it, they’re dead to me as far as I’m concerned. This goes to those who’ve done me wrong back home, you’re also dead to me.

If I was a heel in pro wrestling, this will be my entrance music because the title are words to live by!

6) HAIM – Let Me Go (2013)

Chilling deep cut! It takes time to build up, but it’s so worth it because “Let Me Go” is a wild ride. Mostly on the relationship side, but the way Danielle and Este’s vocals were delivered, it stands out from the crowd.

5) U2 – Until the End of the World (1991)

Walking alone at The Getty in August with this song on repeat allowed me to escape from reality and appreciate the art and scenic vibes.

Later in the year, I think about being alone on the hills of Los Angeles, reflecting on what’s happening. Not having to worry about a fucking thing and genuinely happy. Something I’m far from and probably won’t reach such pinnacle until 2025 at the earliest.

Some of my visual dreams, I tell these stories to a shy but amazing woman who’s an excellent listener. I don’t know, this song is meant to be used in a film where such settings are applicable.

4) The Beaches – Blame Brett (2023)

My favorite summer jam of 2023 and my favorite song that was released in 2023! Duh! It really wasn’t much of a contest which new song stood out because “Blame Brett” is a masterpiece.

This is what a bad ass rock song should be! Memorable verses, memorable choruses and a memorable sound! What more can I say that I haven’t about this band already?

3) Ministry – Burning Inside (1989)

“What happens when the world is yours and then you lose it?”

Words to live by from the greatest video game intro of all-time. Adrenaline to the mix and it fucking shreds! Absolute bad ass song that got me through 2023.

2) Parade of Lights – Golden (2015)

Working NCAA Women’s March Madness was the highlight of the year and hearing “Golden” during those four days was a blessing in disguise. I added the song on my ever increasing traveling playlist, but it didn’t play until I was working in Spokane several weeks later.

Naturally, golden is a color associated in Indiana and with the 107th Indy 500 around the corner, “Golden” was the quintessential song to hear. By far one of the most underrated songs of the 2010s.

1) Depeche Mode – Never Let Me Down Again (Live) (1988)

June 18, 1988 was the night Depeche Mode ruled The Rose Bowl crowd and had the world at the palm of their hands with their iconic performance of “Never Let Me Down Again.”

All year long, I gravitated to the live performances of this song. It just hits different and the whole build before Dave Gahan waves both his hands and the crowd joining him in unison is a tale old as time.

A song like that didn’t took long to realize that Depeche Mode may top my year-end charts once again and glad it did. Nothing was able to beat this song since hearing it around Royal Rumble time. Absolutely nothing! Timeless song that’s stood the test of time and made an impact in my life this year.

Once again, another blog in the books. Hope you’ve enjoyed these songs and perhaps be inspired by acts you might’ve never heard before.

All of us have our personal taste in music and this year was pretty telling. More so because I’ve learned how a certain year can be for a person based on what they’ve enjoyed hearing.

As always, time will tell which 100 songs resonated with me in 2024. For now, enjoy what the rest of 2023 has to offer and hope 2024 is much better.

Until we meet again, doubt me if you insist, prove me wrong if I give consent.
